Cenozoic Antarctic Peninsula Temperatures and Glacial Erosion Signals From a Multi‐Proxy Biomarker Study

چکیده
Terrestrial climate records for Antarctica, beyond the age limit of ice cores, are restricted to few unglaciated areas with exposed rock outcrops. Marine sediments on Antarctica's continental shelves contain past oceanic and terrestrial environments that can provide important insights into Antarctic evolution. The SHALDRIL II (Shallow Drilling Continental Margin) expedition recovered sedimentary sequences from eastern side Peninsula late Eocene, Oligocene, middle Miocene, early Pliocene provides Cenozoic sheet development. Here, we use biomarker data assess atmospheric temperatures glacial reworking Eocene Pliocene. Analyses hopanes n-alkanes indicate increased erosion mature (thermally altered) soil components reworked by erosion. Branched glycerol dialkyl tetraethers bacteria suggest similar air 12°C ± 1°C (1σ, n = 46) months above freezing Miocene timeslices but much colder (and likely shorter) periods thaw during (5°C 1°C, 4) Peninsula. TEX86-based (Tetraether index 86 carbons) sea surface temperature estimates ocean cooling 7°C 3°C (n 10) in 3) Pliocene, consistent deep cooling. Resulting useful constraints model simulations seeking improve understanding response under a range conditions.

Early cenozoic glaciation, antarctic weathering, and seawater
Stable and radiogenic isotopic and sedimentological data from sub-Antarctic deep sea sediment cores reveal a temporal link between changes in seawater SrrSr ratios and major episodes of late Eocene–early Oligocene climate change. The SrrSr records show two major inflections, one at 38–39 Ma near the middlerlate Eocene boundary, followed by another at 33.4 Ma. Similarly, the oxygen isotope, ice-...
متن کاملLeg 178 Antarctic Peninsula
Leg 178 will drill eight sites off the Pacific margin of the Antarctic Peninsula to provide a highresolution record of Antarctic continental climate over the past 6-10 m.y. and a direct check on the presumed glacio-eustatic origin of global sea-level change over the same period. Moreover, it is an essential preliminary to the more difficult task of extracting the complete Cenozoic record of Ant...
متن کاملThe triggering of sub-glacial lake drainage during the rapid glacier drawdown: Crane Glacier, Antarctic Peninsula
Ice surface altimetry from ICESat-1 and NASA aircraft altimeter overflights spanning 2002– 09 indicate that a region of lower Crane Glacier, Antarctic Peninsula, shows an unusual temporal pattern of elevation loss: a period of very rapid drawdown ( 91ma between September 2004 and September 2005) bounded by periods of large but more moderate rates (23ma until September 2004; 12ma after September...
متن کاملGlacial meltwater dynamics in coastal waters west of the Antarctic peninsula.
The annual advance and retreat of sea ice has been considered a major physical determinant of spatial and temporal changes in the structure of the Antarctic coastal marine ecosystem. However, the role of glacial meltwater on the hydrography of the Antarctic Peninsula ecosystem has been largely ignored, and the resulting biological effects have only been considered within a few kilometers from s...
متن کاملStatistical analysis and time-series models for minimum/maximum temperatures in the Antarctic Peninsula
It is now widely known that Antarctic air is warming faster than the rest of the world, and theAntarcticPeninsula has experiencedmajorwarming over the last 50years.Themonthly mean near surface temperature at the Faraday/Vernadsky station has increased considerably, at a rate of 0.568C per decade over the year and at 1.098C per decade over thewinter. The increase is not the same over all the sta...
